The router is the front door to all your devices. With these 8 steps you close the most common gaps. Menu names differ by manufacturer – the terms help you find them.

Why: With the default password, anyone on your Wi-Fi can change your router's settings – for example the DNS server, to redirect you to fake sites.
How: Open the router interface in your browser (the address is usually on the bottom of the device, often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) and set a long, unique password under “System” or “Administration”.
And on the go?
At home you control the router – in a café, hotel or train you do not. There a VPN protects your connection, because everything goes encrypted through the tunnel. Go to IP check
