Direct access to your bank
Access your online banking only through the banking app or by typing the address yourself or using a saved bookmark. Never via a link from an email, SMS, or search ad – fake bank pages even appear in search results.
Read authorizations carefully
Whether it's an app authorization, TAN generator, or code: Read what you are authorizing before every confirmation. If it mentions a transfer, a new device, or a card payment that you did not initiate, abort the process. Scammers often disguise transfers as a "security check" or "chargeback."
The most common scams
- Fake bank employee on the phone: The displayed number looks authentic but is spoofed. The caller requests authorization to allegedly stop fraud. Real employees never ask for codes or authorizations.
- Message "Your account will be blocked": The link leads to a fake login page.
- "New security procedure": You are asked to set up an app again via link or call – in reality, the criminals are linking their own device to your account.
- Remote access: A supposed support agent wants access to your computer while you open banking.
Basic protection in five points
- Keep your mobile phone, computer, and banking app up to date.
- Use a separate, long password for banking that you do not use anywhere else.
- Lock your mobile phone with a PIN or fingerprint.
- Enable notifications for every debit so that you immediately notice anything unknown.
- Set a daily limit for transfers that suits your everyday life.
Banking on the go
In unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks – in a café, hotel, or train – you cannot know who operates the network. A VPN encrypts your connection so that no one can eavesdrop or redirect you unnoticed. Even simpler: Use mobile data instead of open Wi-Fi for banking on the go.
If something happens?
- Call your bank immediately or have your card and access blocked – in Germany, this is available 24/7 via the emergency block number 116 116.
- Change your banking password from a clean device.
- Secure evidence and file a police report.
- On our first-aid page, you will find all the steps to check off.
