Charge Safely On the Go: USB Stations, Cables, and Power Banks

At the airport, train, or café, public USB ports are handy. With a few simple habits, you can charge your phone there without compromising your data or security.

About it

A USB port can provide more than just power—it can also transfer data. Security researchers have shown that compromised charging stations or cables can attempt to gain access to your device through them. Such incidents in everyday life are rare, and modern phones now ask for permission before sharing any data. But it pays to know a few simple rules while on the go – they cost nothing.

The safest solution: your own plug or power bank

  • Charge from a regular outlet using your own power adapter. Only power flows through.
  • A personal power bank lets you stay completely independent of unknown ports.
  • Use your own cables. Stranger, left‑over or gifted cables can be tampered with.

If you must use a public USB port

  • When your phone asks after connecting whether to trust the device or allow data transfer, select “Don’t trust” or “Charge only.”
  • Unlock your phone when charging at unknown ports only if absolutely necessary.
  • A pure charging cable without data lines—or a small “data blocker” adapter—lets only power pass through.
  • Keep your phone up to date. Updates patch exactly the gaps that could be exploited in such attacks.

Don’t forget about unfamiliar computers

If you plug your phone into a stranger’s laptop or a hotel business center computer for charging, the same rule applies: don’t trust, charge only. Don’t transfer files to devices you don’t recognize.

The bigger risk on the road: open Wi‑Fi

Open Wi‑Fi at airports, hotels, or trains is far more common than compromised charging stations. Other users on the same network could eavesdrop or redirect you to malicious sites. A VPN encrypts your traffic all the way to our server. Alternatively, you can use your mobile data.

Quick travel checklist

  • Pack your own power adapter and cable
  • Charge your power bank
  • With unfamiliar ports: select “Don’t trust” or “Charge only”
  • Keep your phone up to date, and have VPN ready for public Wi‑Fi
