How Vacation Rental Scams Work
Scammers copy photos of real properties, post them at an enticing price, and take a deposit upfront. When travelers arrive, they may find a stranger’s door—or no property at all. Other tricks involve cloned booking sites, fake confirmation messages, and bogus extra fees after the reservation.
Red Flags for Accommodations
- The price is far below what similar listings in the area charge.
- The provider wants to move the conversation off the booking platform to a messenger or email.
- Payment is requested via overseas bank transfer, cash‑transfer services, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
- They create urgency: “Three other families are interested; please pay the deposit today.”
- The photos appear in reverse image searches on other listings or locations.
Book Safely
- Keep all communication and payment within the platform you used for booking—only there is protection.
- Pay with a credit card or another method that offers buyer protection whenever possible.
- Verify a private landlord’s vacation‑rental address on a map and, if possible, with street view.
- If unsure about a hotel, call the number listed on their official website and confirm your reservation.
Fake Booking Sites and Messages
- Visit the booking site directly instead of clicking on ads or links in messages. Inspect the URL carefully—replicas often differ by just one letter. Our link checker can help.
- After a legitimate booking, you might receive fake messages like “Your card was declined, please re-enter your details.” Always verify such notices within the platform’s own account.
- Beware of messages promising “free upgrades” or travel contests.
Flights and Car Rentals
Ultra‑low fares from unknown agents are a common ploy. Book directly with the airline or reputable vendors, then verify the booking using the reference code on the airline’s website.
Booking On the Go
When booking over hotel, airport, or café Wi‑Fi, others on the same network might snoop or redirect you to counterfeit sites. Switch to mobile data or use a VPN that encrypts your connection to our server.
If You’re Affected
- Immediately contact your bank or card issuer and try to halt or reverse the transaction.
- Report the listing to the platform so others can be protected.
- Preserve screenshots, messages, and payment receipts, then file a police report.
